Weekly Recreation Report – April 4, 2014

The Whitewood Minor Hockey Supper will be next Friday April 11th in the arena lobby. Tickets are $5 for all players and children with adult tickets costing $10. Also at the supper awards will be given out on each team for most dedicated, most valuable and most sportsman. Contact your team manager to arrange for your tickets or contact Jason Krupski at j.mkrupski@sasktel.net.

Whitewood’s Not So Famous People Players will be performing “The Lost City of the Nunus” on April 26th, May 2nd and May 3rd in the Whitewood Curling rink. Tickets go on sale on April 5th for $25 with a choice of seating. Tickets after April 5th are $28 and can be purchased by contacting Donna Beulter at 735-2883.

The Ringleader Roller Girls are preparing for the upcoming summer season and would like to put a call out for interested players and off-track officials. Practices will be held twice a week throughout the summer in Whitewood and no experience is necessary. As well, the team will be hosting Jr. Derby again this summer. Whitewood Up and Active, originally scheduled to conclude at the end of last month will continue for at least another 2 weeks. To ensure that all residents have a safe, comfortable and inviting place to get exercise the community centre will continue to be open from 8:30am to 11:30am, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. While the ice may be gone the facility is still here for your use!

With the ice out at the community centre I want to give a quick word of thanks to all of our community volunteers, coaches and officials who made our winter season a success! Now with the ice is out comes the time for summer maintenance so if you have any ideas or suggestions for small projects to make our community centre even better please drop me a quick email (matt@townofwhitewood.ca).

Weekly Recreation Report – March 28, 2014

The first meeting of the new walking club is scheduled for Tuesday April 1st at 7pm in the curling rink lobby. The organization is currently in the preliminary planning stages and input from all interested parties will be taken at the meeting. If you are looking to walk, run, or just meet like minded people you are encouraged to attend. The club will be open to people of all fitness levels and expectations. Registration for minor ball is expected to take place in the next few weeks. Keep tuned to this column for more information when it becomes available. Teams will begin practicing in the community centre and, once the elements allow, will then move outside for the remainder of the season.

With our ice season coming to an end on March 31st this weekend is your last chance to lace up the skates before September. Public skating will be offered Sunday March 30th from 5:30pm to 7:30pm, Monday March 31st from 8:30am to 11:30am and 3pm to 6pm. The last stick and puck session will be on Monday March 31st from 8pm to 10pm.

Weekly Recreation Report – March 21, 2014

A walking club is being formed in Whitewood and all interested participants are encouraged to attend the first meeting on Tuesday April 1st at 7pm in the curling rink lobby. A huge congratulations to the following skaters from Whitewood Skating Club who passed tests at Moosomin’s test day March 16th: Mackenzie Moore completed her Gold Skills and passed her last 2 Gold Dances. Passing the Dutch Waltz dance were Olivia Flaman, Grace Keeley, Tennessee Goodbrand, Alexis McFadden, and Joey Scott. Olivia also passed the Canasta, and Kathryn Bartlam passed both the Canasta and Baby Blues. Kennedy Sippola passed her Senior Bronze Skill and Keats Foxtrot.

Whitewood Minor Soccer is hosting a registration night on March 26th from 6pm to 7pm in the curling rink lobby. All parents with children interested in playing soccer should plan to attend. Soccer will be starting in early April with an indoor season before moving outside once the weather allows. For more information contact Nicole Scott at 735-2374

Yoga and Zumba are starting on March 26th but there is still time to register! Registrations for the 7pm Zumba class and 9pm yoga class will be taken until noon on Tuesday March 25th. Each class costs $60 for 6 session and you can register by seeing me in the recreation office or calling 735-4415.

Weekly Recreation Report – March 14, 2014

First yoga and now Zumba! Whitewood Recreation will be hosting Zumba starting March 26th and running for 6 weeks. Zumba exercise classes are “fitness-parties” that blend upbeat world rhythms with easy-to-follow choreography, for a total-body workout that feels like a celebration. Zumba class will be held from 7pm to 8pm in the Arena and costs $60 to attend. Registrations are being accepted in the recreation office so bring your cheques in now to reserve your spot.

Our yoga class on Wednesday nights has had a tremendous response and I’m sorry to say that all 24 spots have been spoken for. I am currently taking names for a waiting list but …. I am also able to offer a second session on Wednesday nights from 9pm to 10pm. This class will be a duplicate of the 8pm class and will run the same 6 weeks and cost the same for registration. Please contact the recreation office asap if you are interested in this later time. A minimum of 10 interested people are needed to run this second session.

Saturday March 22nd in the school library Whitewood Action for Families is sponsoring a painting class focusing on wet over wet technique. Cost is $25 which includes all materials and all participants will take home a 20” x 16” painting. The class runs from 1pm to 4pm and to register or for more information call Peggy at 306-735-2711

Weekly Recreation Report – March 7, 2014

 

Yoga is coming to Whitewood for a six week class starting on March 26th.  This class is scheduled for Wednesday nights from 8pm to 9pm in the curling rink and is open to people of all ages and skill levels.  Ashley Draper is a 200 hour certified yoga instructor who teaches Hatha Yoga which focuses on slow and gentle movements, perfect to wind down at the end of the day.  The cost is $60 and should be provided via cash or post-dated cheque at time of registration.  Please email me for more information.

 

Teams are still being accepted for the final two bonspiels of the season at the Whitewood Curling Rink.  From March 17th to the 20th Whitewood hosts the Seniors 49ers Bonspiel.  For more information about registration please contact Evrette Thompson at 735-2668.  After the seniors bonspiel is the Whitewood Farmers and Friends Bonspiel from March 21st through 23rd.  This fun spiel is for curlers of all skill levels and offers great prizes and lots of fun for everyone.  For more information, or to sign up your team, contact Chad Kelly at 735-7810.

 

We have another very busy minor hockey weekend coming up with eight games schedule between now and Wednesday March 12th.  Not only do we have two “Whitewood Black vs. Whitewood Orange” games but our Novice teams are both fighting to get into the Novice B banner round.  Come out and cheer on our future stars in one of their last home games!

Weekly Recreation Report – February 28, 2014

 

The Whitewood swimming pool is now accepting applications for all positions this summer.  If you are an outgoing, enthusiastic and fun individual who would like to be a lifeguard or swim instructor please forward your resume with qualifications to me at matt@townofwhitewood.ca.  Full job postings are available on www.townofwhitewood.ca.

 

The Whitewood Community Centre will be hosting 8 Ochapowace Minor Hockey Thunder playoff games to finish the season.  The atom, peewee and bantam Thunder will be hosting teams from around the southeast as they finish their respective playoff schedules.  With these extra minor hockey games scheduled all families involved with the rink kitchen should check the schedule at the rink and online to see if any of their shifts have been changed.  The rink kitchen schedule is available at www.townofwhitewood.ca/kitchenschedule/.

 

With our own minor hockey teams finishing their playoffs soon the rink will be busy the next two weekends with playoff games.  Saturday March 1st the arena hosts 4 games, Sunday March 2nd there are 3 games scheduled and on the weekend of March 8th and 9th there are another 4 games scheduled.  Don’t miss your last chance to see some excellent Major Hockey League action.

 

At the curling rink plans are underway for two of the biggest bonspiels of the season.  March 17th to the 20th Whitewood hosts the Seniors 49ers Bonspiel and on March 21st to the 23rd is the Farmers and Friends Bonspiel.  Contact Chad Kelly for more information at 735-7810.

Weekly Recreation Report – February 14, 2014

 

Make sure you come to the arena this Saturday to watch our two PreNovice hockey teams host Esterhazy and Melville in a 1 day tournament.  Game times are 9:30am, 11:00am, 12:30am and 2:00pm. These 4, 5 and 6 year olds have been on the ice all year learning the game so make sure you get out and show your support.

 

Please remember that public skating times are intended as skating only.  Sticks and pucks are not allowed and staff will be asking those not following these rules to leave.  If you wish to drop in and play some hockey you can do so on Wednesdays from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, Fridays from 3:00pm to 4:30pm and also on Sundays from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.  If you have any questions please give me a call.

 

Our Whitewood Midget Elks hockey team will be hosting their final regular season home game on Saturday February 22nd at 5:00pm against Preeceville.  This game will determine final placement within the standings for the team as they look towards the playoffs.  Cost is $4.00 for adults, $2.00 for seniors, $1.00 for students and those 13 and under are free.

Weekly Recreation Report – February 7, 2014

 

This weekend Whitewood is hosting the Senior Mens Southern Playdowns at the Whitewood Curling Rink.  The top 16 teams from Southern Saskatchewan are in town to compete for the chance to go to provincials.  There are a total of 11 draws over the course of 4 days with the top 4 teams moving on to provincials at the end of February.  You can purchase your full weekend event passes for $10 or single draw passes for $5.  The draw schedule is available by going to www.townofwhitewood.ca/draw-schedule.

 

Upcoming at the curling rink is the 3rd annual Kevin’s Krazy Kashspiel.  This bonspiel takes place February 14th to the 16th.  It features a 100% entry payout and a max of 16 teams.  Call Chad Kelly at 735-7810 to register.

 

Our Whitewood Novice Elks hockey teams will be playing their first of two playoff games against one another on Wednesday February 12th at 6pm.  Make sure you come out and support our future local stars.  Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for seniors and $1 for students.

 

Don’t forget that Whitewood Up and Active is still running on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.  The doors are open from 8:30am to 11:30 for anyone who wants to walk, skate, run, relax or warm up!  It is free to attend and is a great way to get some winter exercise in without braving the elements.

Weekly Recreation Report – January 31, 2014

 

The Whitewood/Grenfell Midget Elks will be hosting the Assiniboia Stingers in Game 1 of their SHA Midget B provincial playdowns this SAturday.  The Elks and Stingers face off at 4:00pm at the Whitewood Community Centre. So make sure you come out and support local hockey!  Public skating on Saturday has been cancelled due to the game but will still be available on Sunday February 1st from 3:30pm to 5:30pm as usual.

The Whitewood Orioles are hosting game 3 of their best of 7 first round playoff series with the Rocanville Tigers this Friday January 31st at 8:15pm.  The Orioles are down 2 games to none in the series so your fan support is needed to get the boys into the win column.

 

Our hard-working figure skaters continued their successful season this past weekend in Yorkton. Tennessee Goodbrand earned a Bronze Medal in Introductory Freeskate at Regionals. Honorable mention to Kennedy Sippola who placed 4th in a tough flight of Junior Bronze Freeskate. Mackenzie Moore passed 2 gold dances at test day. Congratulations girls!

 

This weekend is the Women’s Breast Cancer Bonspiel at the curling rink.  All profits will be donated to Breast Cancer Action Saskatchewan!  If you wish to attend the banquet Saturday night please call Corinna Francis at 735-7737.  Advance tickets are $12.00 for dinner and entertainment.  Our next bonspiel is still taking registrations.  The 3rd annual Kevin’s Krazy Kashspiel takes place February 14th to the 16th.  It features a 100% entry payout and a max of 16 teams.  Call Chad Kelly at 735-7810 to register.

Weekly Recreation Report – January 24, 2014

 

It’s almost bonspiel time at the curling rink.  Our first major bonspiel will be the Women’s Breast Cancer Bonspiel on January 31 and February 1.  Sign up as an individual or a full team by contacting Carla Bartlam (735-2212) or Jennalee Beutler (735-7136).  Next up is the, 3rd Annual Kevin’s Krazy Kashspiel on February 14, 15 and 16.  After that is the Seniors 49ers Bonspiel from March 17 to 20. And finally our last bonspiel will be the Farmers and Friends Bonspiel on March 21, 22 and 23.

We will be having another session of mom and baby yoga starting January 29th.  It costs $50 for 5 sessions and classes will be in the curling rink lobby starting at 10:30am.  Make sure you bring a yoga mat and blanket for your baby.  Anyone is welcome to attend and you can contact Kate Leepart (akleepart@gmail.com) for more information.

Minor hockey playoff schedules for the Whitewood Novice and Atom teams are now complete.  You can view how your future stars are doing by visiting www.majorhockeyleague.ca. Whitewood Novice Orange play their first playoff home game against Esterhazy on Wednesday January 29th at 6:15pm and Whitewood Novice Black play their next home playoff game on Saturday February 1st at 1:45pm against Grandplains Manitoba.

 

The Orioles and Sr. Thunder start their respective playoff series this weekend.  The Orioles will host game 2 on Saturday January 25th at 8:15pm.  Come out and support your hometown boys in their series against Rocanville!
