Weekly Recreation Report – January 17, 2014

 

Saturday January 18th is Minor Hockey Day in Whitewood!  We are hosting five games from Pre-Novice to Atom starting at 9am.  All proceeds from the day go to support minor hockey in our community and keeping kids healthy and active.  Game times are 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm and 5pm with teams coming from Kipling, Langenburg, Churchbridge, Esterhazy and Melville!

 

Public skating is being offered an extra 3 days per week in 2014.  Besides our regular times on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, we now have skating on Monday’s at 7:30pm, Saturdays at 3:30pm and Sundays at 3:30pm.  Come and enjoy a relaxing skate at the Whitewood rink.

 

Mom and Baby yoga has been running on Wednesday mornings the past two months and we will be offering a new 5 week session starting January 29th.  It costs $50 for 5 sessions and classes will be in the curling rink lobby starting at 10:30am.  Make sure you bring a yoga mat and blanket for your baby.  Anyone is welcome to attend and you can contact Kate Leepart for more information (akleepart@gmail.com).

Besides Mom and Baby yoga, I am in the process of setting up a Zumba/Yoga class for one evening a week starting in February.  Keep an eye on this column in the coming weeks for more details such as cost, time and dates.

 

Minor hockey teams are just scheduling playoff games now.  Keep up to date on exactly when each team plays by visiting www.townofwhitewood.ca/arena/ for the most up to date schedule.  As well, with more games being scheduled some minor hockey parents may have extra kitchen shifts for January and February.  Please look at the schedule to ensure you don’t miss a shift!

Weekly Recreation Report – January 10, 2014

 

Welcome to 2014!  With the Christmas holidays over things are ramping up as teams head into playoffs.  The Whitewood/Wapella atom team is waiting to see who they play in the playoffs and both novice teams are finishing their regular season this weekend.

 

Congratulations to figure skater Kennedy Sippola who received a bronze medal in the Skate Virden Competition for her Elements program! As well, good luck to Kennedy as well as Tennessee Goodbrand, Alexis McFadden, and Grace Keeley who will be attending the Regional Competition in Yorkton at the end of January!  The Whitewood Skating Club boasts 22 skaters of all ages and they practice every Friday and Sunday.

 

The Whitewood Orioles have three games left in the regular season including a game this Friday January 10th against Ochapowace at 8:00pm.  The Birds currently sit in 6th place with a 6-7 record.

 

I’m happy to announce that in 2014 we have 3 more days with public skating time.  Monday evenings there will be public skating from 7:30pm to 9pm, and on Saturday and Sunday public skating is scheduled from 3:30pm to 5:30pm.  Don’t forget either that Up and Active Whitewood is still running on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings for the remainder of the winter.

 

Lastly, the Whitewood Curling Club is hosting the Master Men South East Playdown on the weekend of January 24, 25, 26th.  Don’t miss out on some of the best curlers in the southeast.

Weekly Recreation Report – December 23, 2013

 

The members of the Whitewood Skating Club are having a busy, successful year so far! Congratulations to Mackenzie Moore and Taylor Crossman who recently passed tests at a test day in Melville. Mackenzie passed her Senior Silver Skills test, as well as her Paso Doble dance test. Taylor finished off her Senior Bronze Freeskate test. Good luck to Tennessee Goodbrand and Kennedy Sippola who will be representing Whitewood at the end of December in the Skate Virden Competition.

 

Up and Active Whitewood is taking a break over the holiday season and will be resuming on January 6th and continuing on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.

 

Public skating is scheduled for Sunday December 29th from 3pm to 8pm and on Saturday January 4th from 1:30pm to 4pm before resuming on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at 3pm.  In the New Year keep your eyes on this column for information about a regular evening public skating time.

Things are quieting down a bit with the holidays on the horizon.  TIPS grants are currently being reviewed and all successful groups should receive their cheques sometime this week.  We will be distributing over $11,000 to recreation, culture and arts groups in Whitewood to help offer programs and services!

 

The Whitewood Orioles are hosting their final game of 2013 on December 20th at 8:15pm vs. Bredenbury.  Come out and support your home team!

 

Your last chance to join the recreational company curling league is this week.  The league will run 10 consecutive Wednesdays beginning on January 8th.  Beginners, full teams and individuals are all welcome.  For more information please contact Chad Kelly at 735-7810.

 

Public skating will have its last regular session on Thursday December 19th before resuming in the New Year on January 7th.  In the meantime, there will be a special public skating sessions on Sunday December 29th from 3pm to 8pm and on Saturday January 4th from 1:30pm to 4pm.

 

Up and Active Whitewood will also be taking a hiatus over the holidays.  Our last date of 2013 is December 20th with the program resuming on Monday January 6th.  Come out and get some exercise in our clean, warm and friendly atmosphere.

Weekly Recreation Report – December 9, 2013

 

Up and Active Whitewood is now one week in the books!  We’ve had a bunch of people stop by to do everything from walking, to skating to a full on workout.  Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday this winter come to the rink from 8:30am to 11:30 am to get in some exercise.  It’s free to attend!

 

I have been able to organize a trial run of a fitness class for Wednesday December 11th and Tuesday December 17th.  Both nights the class will start at 7pm in the curling lounge.  This fun fitness dance class is free to participate in and everyone is welcome to attend.  Give me a call for more information.

 

The Orioles are going to be busy over the next couple of weeks with five games over the next two weeks before Christmas break.  The Birds host Moosomin on Wednesday the 11th, Langenburg on Friday the 13th and Bredenbury on Friday the 20th.  All games start at 8:15pm.  Minor hockey is also busy over the next two weeks with Whitewood hosting 7 games over the same time period.  For a complete, up-to-date schedule of games please visit www.townofwhitewood.ca/arena/

 

All community arts, culture and recreation groups are reminded that TIPS grant applications are due to either the recreation office or town office by 4pm on Thursday December 12th.  Grants are available to help provide programs and services to Whitewood residents.  If any groups are having difficulties completing their applications they should contact me ASAP for assistance.

Weekly Recreation Report – December 2, 2013

 

Santa is coming to Whitewood!  The annual Whitewood Santa Day is on Thursday December 5th with Santa arriving at 6:30pm.  The arena will be available for FREE public skating from 3pm to 8pm, horse-drawn sleigh rides start at 5:30pm and there will be free hot chocolate, hotdogs and candy bags for the kids.  Come on out for the kickoff to the Christmas season.

 

Today is the start of Up and Active Whitewood!  The arena is open for everyone to come and walk, skate or socialize.  Doors open at 8:30am and there will be coffee is available.  This is a great opportunity to get some exercise during the cold winter months.

 

The Whitewood Curling Club hosted their first night of the Superleague this past week with the next night scheduled for December 3rd.  Teams from Carlyle, Maryfield, Wawota and of course Whitewood are all competing.  The curling starts at 7pm for anyone interested in watching.

Weekly Recreation Report – November 25, 2013

 

Another week, another program starting up!  Mom and Baby yoga is being held in the Whitewood Curling lobby on Wednesday mornings at 10:30am starting November 27th.  There will be 5 classes, three before Christmas and 2 after New Years.  The program costs $10 per session and participants should bring a yoga mat for themselves and a blanket for their babies. This past week we had our first matches of the Thursday night skins league in the curling rink.  It is still not too late to signup if you are interested in curling this year.  Get in touch with me and I will be happy to provide more information.

 

With some stones already thrown it is time to announce our bonspiel dates this year.  Our first bonspiel is the Women’s Breast Cancer Bonspiel on January 31 and February 1.  The next is the 3rd Annual Kevin’s Krazy Kashspiel on February 14, 15 and 16.  From March 17 to 20 we will be hosting the Seniors 49ers Bonspiel and lastly from March 21 to 23 is the Farmers and Friends Bonspiel.

 

If hockey is more your thing the Orioles host Ochapowace on Friday night at 8:15pm.  On Saturday night Ochapowace host Kipling at 8pm and all day Saturday and Sunday is the Whitewood Novice tournament.

Weekly Recreation Report – November 18, 2013

 

To build on my announcement from last week, Up and Active Whitewood is a new program starting on December 2nd that is open for anyone to attend.  The arena will be open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings for people to walk, skate and socialize.  The program is free to attend and if you need any more information please give me a call.

 

I am happy to announce that Whitewood has been approved for a grant of $500 to purchase new tennis equipment.  We will be receiving a new tennis net, 16 tennis racquets and 2 dozen tennis balls in the coming weeks.  With this new equipment I will be hosting some clinics this summer for people young and old.  Keep an eye on this column for more details in the coming months.

 

I would like to thank the people who have spent considerable time over the past two weeks flooding, painting and just generally getting the curling rink ready to use.  Your help is greatly appreciated by everyone.

Up and Active Whitewood is a new program starting on December 2nd that lets all community members use the arena to be active during the cold winter months.  On each Monday, Wednesday and Friday this winter the arena will be open for everyone to come and walk in the safe, heated and open arena lobby.  As well, the ice surface will be open for public skating each morning and coffee will be available for those who want to come and socialize.  This program is FREE for everyone so there are no excuses to not attend.  Doors will be open at 8:30am each morning and the program will run until 11:30am.  If you need more information please don’t hesitate to give me a call.

 

Besides our regular public skating hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3pm.  I have also scheduled in four extra dates to come and skate.  This Friday November 15th from 7 to 8pm, Saturday December 7th from 5:45pm to 7:00pm, Saturday December 14th from 3:30pm to 4:45pm and Saturday December 21st from 5:45pm to 7:30pm.

 

Minor hockey is officially in full swing!  Our local Midget hockey team is having their home opener today at 8:15pm vs. Rocanville.  Come out and support our local teams!

Weekly Recreation Report – November 4, 2013

 

It is a busy week upcoming at the arena as we host 6 minor hockey games, an Atom AA game and the Orioles home opener.  The Orioles play Rocanville on Friday November 8th, puckdrop at 8:15pm.  Single game tickets can be purchased at the door or become a booster for only $100.  An up-to-date arena schedule is available at www.townofwhitewood.ca/arena.

 

Whitewood Minor Hockey is holding a bottle drive on November 8th so save those bottles and keep an eye out for our future hockey stars.  Every little bit helps to keep hockey affordable for our youth.

 

Ice in the curling rink is being started this week with volunteers helping to flood the surface, paint the circles and lay the lines down.  If you’re interested in curling this year please contact Chad Kelly at 735-7810 ASAP as the Thursday skins league is expected to start on November 14th.

 

You may have read two weeks ago that I will be hosting a walking club in the arena lobby this winter.  I’m happy to say that planning is well underway so keep an eye on this column for our first date, tentatively scheduled for the first week of December.

 

Lastly a reminder that public skating is being offered this winter on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3pm.  Additionally, anyone wishing to drop in and play hockey can do so on Wednesdays and Fridays at 3pm.
