Weekly Recreation Report – October 15, 2013

Now that the arena is up and running, it’s time to organize the curling rink for another year.  The Whitewood Curling Club is looking for members to play in various leagues this season.  Membership costs are $145 for one night a week, $195 for two nights a week and $70 for students.  For more information, or to sign up your team, call Chad Kelly at 735-7810.

Hockey schedules are slowly trickling in but I can confirm three games for the Ochapowace Junior B Thunder.  They will be playing Fort Knox on October 18th at 7:45pm, the Silver Foxes on November 22nd at 7:30pm and finally the Delisle Chiefs come to Whitewood on December 7th at 7:30pm.  Come on out and enjoy some fast-paced, hard-hitting junior hockey.

The public skating schedule has been finalized for the season.  Public skating will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 3pm and continuing until 4:45pm.  Stick and puck sessions will be on Wednesdays from 3pm to 4:45pm and Fridays from 3pm to 4:15pm.  Just a reminder, no pucks will be allowed on the ice during public skating and during stick and puck sessions everyone must wear a helmet.  Also, keep your eyes here for some evening public skating sessions throughout the winter.

Whitewood is hosting two coaching clinics on the weekend of October 26th and 27th.  If you need to update your certifications or want to climb one more level, signup by going to http://townofwhitewood.ca/coaching.  We are hosting Intro Coach, Checking Coach and Coach Levels.

I’m still looking certified instructors to host fitness programs this winter.  If you, or someone you know wants to get paid while getting fit please give me a call.  I will happily pay for any fitness certifications you need.

Until next week,

Weekly Recreation Report – October 7, 2013

Things are in full swing here at the arena with bookings most night from 5pm to 11pm.  Minor hockey is getting ready to begin in the next week or two and Canskate will begin at the end of the month.

Speaking of Canskate, they held their registration night last week but are still looking for skaters for this season.  Sessions will be held Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. If you’re interested in signing up, please give me a call ASAP at 735-4415.

The Southeast Connection Sport, Culture & Recreation District along with the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region are looking to motivate older adults in the south east to get active through the “Forever…in motion” program.  Programs will be led by volunteer peer leaders who have taken the FREE Forever…in motion training program.  Training will be hosted in the south east and mileage will be paid. If you’re interested in becoming a peer leader please get in touch with me so I can provide more information.

Lastly, I’m looking to host fitness programs throughout the winter and need certified instructors.  If you, or someone you know wants to get paid while getting fit please give me a call.  I will happily pay for updated or new fitness certifications should you be interested.

Until next week,

Whitewood Recreation Report – September 23, 2013

One week in the books here are the arena.  We’ve had a great time with the 4-on-4 league, the Jets pre-season and some rec hockey.  The public skating schedule is currently being created but for the next two weeks public skating will be Tuesdays from 4 to 6:15pm and Thursdays from 3 to 4:45pm.  The cost for public skating is free if you’ve paid skating fees so just bring your skates and enjoy. Once the full skating schedule is finalized I will post it here, on the website and on the whiteboard at the rink.

As we get closer to October the Orioles will begin skating with their first practice scheduled for later this week.  The team will be on the ice Thursdays and Sundays until their first exhibition game scheduled for the end of October. The Orioles will again be playing in the Triangle Hockey League and are looking to improve on their fourth place finish last year.

This is the last week to get entries and teams together for the Ironman Tournament.  This years tournament will take place on September 28th and 29th with each team playing 2 games of hockey, 2 games of slo-pitch and 2 rounds of golf.  For information or to register please give me a call at 735-4415.

Just because the rink is open doesn’t mean the tennis court is closed.  Racquets and tennis balls are still available for public use at the court beside the swimming pool.

One last thing to remember is our facility schedule is available online.  Go to www.townofwhitewood.ca and under the Recreation menu clicking “Facility Schedule”.  Games, practices and public bookings are all listed.

Until next week,

Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped to put in the ice this year, your contribution helps to ensure the rink is ready and open in a timely manner.

Minor hockey registration is open and forms should be returned by registration night on Thursday September 19th.  If you can’t make it that night to hand in your form in person, bring it to me in the recreation office during normal office hours.  Fees this year are $75 for Snowflake, $100 for Novice and Atom, and $125 for Peewee to Midget.  Skating fees stay the same at $200 plus GST for a single and $450 plus GST for a family.  If you need a copy of the registration form it can be found on the “Whats Up In Recreation” page on the town website.

Did you get some new skates over the summer that you need to work in?  Well there is public skating scheduled both Tuesday (4:00pm to 5:15pm) and Thursday (4:00pm to 5:15pm).  Want to play some hockey?  Shinny is scheduled at 4:00pm this Friday.

Whitewood Recreation Report – September 9, 2013

Work is well underway to get the rink ready for our September 15th opening.  We’ve replaced some of the boards with new pieces, fixed the gates and openings, and refurbished the nets.  I have been busy fielding calls about ice rentals and have a ton of user groups scheduled to use the rink this upcoming season. There is a 4 on 4 league this fall along with Whitewood Minor Hockey, Pipestone Valley Jets, Whitewood Orioles, Rec Hockey, CanSkate, Ochapowace Minor Hockey, and outside bookings are all penciled in.  So many user groups means another busy winter at the rink!

Whitewood Minor Hockey is now accepting registrations for the upcoming season.  There is a registration night scheduled for Thursday September 19th from 6pm to 8pm but forms will be accepted before then.

Besides the action at the rink there are a couple of other events upcoming here in town.  The Whitewood Orioles are hosting a fundraiser golf tournament on September 14th at the golf course.  The tournament is a 9 hole, 4-person best ball and costs $50/person to enter.  Contact Neil Kodman (570-6449) or Jade Bachtold (735-7242) for more details or to register.  The Whitewood Rink is also hosting the Ironman tournament on September 28th and 29th.  Teams will compete in golf, hockey and slo-pitch over the course of the weekend.  Give me a call at 735-4415 for more information.

Until next week,

Whitewood Recreation Report – September 3, 2013

With September already here that means pool is now closed for 2013.  We had a lot of ups and downs this summer but overall participation rates were up over last year.  I want to extend thanks to our lifeguards Ricki-Lee Scott, Bailey Poncelet, Kourtnay Bear, Andrew Istace and Carmen Johanson for their amazing work this summer.

Now that the pool’s closed that means … the rink is opening soon!  Yes, that’s right the arena will be open to rentals on September 16th.  Some of the upcoming events in the arena include the Pipestone Valley Midget AA Jets opening training camp on September 19th, a five week 4-on-4 league begins September 16th.  The Ironman Tournament returns on September 28th and the SHA is hosting a Skills of Gold camp on October 5th and 6th.

With all those exciting hockey activities upcoming lets not forget to register early for minor hockey.  Forms will be distributed soon with registration night scheduled for Thursday September 19th from 6pm to 8pm.

Should you have any questions or wish to register for any of the events I’ve mentioned don’t hesitate to give me a call

Until next week,

Whitewood Recreation Report – August 26, 2013

Welcome to my new weekly recreation report.  I will be writing about things happening at our facilities, programs being offered and exciting upcoming events.

The swimming pool is into its final week of operation and we have an exciting event planned to help celebrate another awesome summer.  On Saturday August 31st the pool is hosting an 18 hole, 2-person scramble golf tournament followed by a BBQ and pool party.  Golfers, your $80 registration fee gets you 18 holes, a chance at cash prizes and 1 meal ticket.  Following the tournament I encourage everyone to please stop by the pool for some FREE swimming!  We will have the BBQ roaring some tunes on and hope to fill the pool one last time this year! To register for the golf tournament or to get more information please give me a call at 735-4415.

With the pool winding down that means the arena will be ready for ice rentals before you know it.  Work is underway to get the ice ready for September but, in the meantime, the Ringleader Roller Girls are hosting an open scrimmage TONIGHT at 7pm.  Tickets are only $5 and can be purchased at the door.

Until next week,

Matt Bahm
