Weekly Recreation Report – March 4, 2016
Come out and see some of the best figure skaters in Saskatchewan right here in Whitewood. The Saskatchewan Stars-On-Ice roadshow will be in Whitewood on Monday March 7th for a 7pm show. Not only will we see provincial and national level skaters but our very own Whitewood Skating Club members will be included. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for seniors and $3 for students.
Help us raise money for the Whitewood Volunteer Fire Department on Friday March 11th as the Whitewood Whalers hockey team takes on Rod Luypaert’s Railer Rats. This fundraiser hockey game expects to be lots of fun with a shootout calcutta, chuck-a-puck, silent auction and 50/50 draw. The game starts at 8pm but come early!
Join the Whitewood Curling Club seniors for their annual 49ers bonspiel on March 14 – 16. This bonspiel is always filled with great curling, great laughs and great fun. There will be three days of curling followed by a banquet on Wednesday evening. If you’re interested putting a team in this bonspiel contact Evrette at 735-2668
March might be upon us but there is still lots of time to use the Whitewood Community Centre. There is regular public skating scheduled on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and regular stick and puck time on Mondays and Wednesdays. In addition, there are special free skate times scheduled on Friday March 18th from 4pm to 8pm, Saturday March 19th from 12pm to 6pm and Thursday March 24th from 11am to 5pm. Come out and have some fun!

Weekly Recreation Report – February 26, 2016
The Whitewood Skating Club is hosting two exciting events in March. The Provincial Stars on Ice will be in Whitewood on Monday March 7th at 7pm. This show is performed by the provincial high-performance team in conjunction with our local club. On Saturday March 12th at 2pm is the Whitewood Skating Club’s annual carnival. This year’s event is called “Under the Big Top on Ice” and will feature every skater in the club performing. Come out and enjoy some awesome skating!
Congratulations to the Whitewood Skating Club members who have passed tests this month at test days in Moosomin and Esterhazy. Tennessee Goodbrand – Swing Dance, Hunter Beutler – Baby Blues Dance, Simone van’t Westeinde – Preliminary Freeskate, Canasta and Baby Blues Dances, Kennedy Sippola – Senior Silver Skills, Silver Interpretive, Kathryn Bartlam – Junior Bronze Skill, Intro Interpretive, Ten Fox Dance.
Join us at the Whitewood Community Centre on Friday March 11th at 8pm for the Fire on Ice Charity Hockey Game. Rod Luypaert’s Railer Rats will be facing the Whitewood Whalers with proceeds from the match to go to the Whitewood Fire Department. This weekend is the Prairie Valley School Division district curling championships. The Whitewood Curling Club is the event host and welcomes spectators for the two day event. Curling starts Friday February 26th at noon and continues until 6pm. On Saturday the first draw is at 10am with the championship draw at 6pm. Come out and cheer on the Whitewood Tigers!

Weekly Recreation Report – February 19, 2016
The Whitewood Curling Club and Whitewood School are hosts of the 2016 Prairie Valley District School Board elementary curling championships on February 26th and 27th. There are three divisions competing here in Whitewood boys, girls and mixed. Action gets underway Friday afternoon at 12pm and concludes with the championships at 6pm on Saturday. Come out and cheer on the Whitewood Tigers!
Don’t forget the ongoing Major Hockey League playoffs at the Whitewood Arena. We have a bunch of upcoming games including this Saturday February 20th where the Atom Orange Elks face off against the Grenfell Spitfires at 1:30pm. On Sunday the 21st the Novice Black Elks face Moosomin at 10am followed later in the day by the Atom Black Elks who take on Melville at 6pm. Lastly, the Novice Black Elks host their Whitewood rivals the Novice Orange Elks on Thursday February 25th at 6pm. See you at the rink!
Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 8:30am to 11am is the Up and Active morning program. This program is designed for people of all ages to come and use the community centre to walk, run and skate. This is a great way to ensure that you get your morning exercise even during the long winter months.
Public skating is offered every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday this winter right up until the end of March. Tuesday and Thursdays public skating is scheduled from 3pm to 5pm and on Sundays it is scheduled from 4pm to 6pm. As always, public skating and stick and puck times are 100% free.

Weekly Recreation Report – February 12, 2016
The Orioles are ready for their first round Triangle Hockey League Playoff series against the Ochapowace Thunder. The Orioles open game one at home on Wednesday February 17th at 8:30pm. Game two and three are in Ochapowace on Friday the 19th and Saturday the 20th. Game four is back in Whitewood on Monday February 22nd at 8:30pm and game five is Tuesday the 23rd in Ochapowace. Come out and support the O’s!
Need to get the kids out of your house for a few hours this February break? The rink will be open for free skate on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 11am to 3pm. Come out for a skate, to shoot some pucks or to play a few games. Regular public skating and hockey times are still scheduled at 3pm each day.
There are officially 25 teams signed up for the Farmers and Friends Bonspiel to be held on April 1st through the 3rd this year. This is going to be a memorable event including a ton of prizes, entertainment, and obviously some great curling. Every team in the bonspiel will also get one entry into the elimination draw on Saturday for a trip for 4 to Las Vegas, valued at $3,000. Call Chad Kelly to register your rink today 735-7810.

Weekly Recreation Report – February 5, 2016
Entries are starting to come in for the Farmers and Friends Bonspiel to be held on April 1st through 3rd this year. The Whitewood Curling Club is hoping for up to 64 teams to curl over the 3 days. This event includes a ton of prizes, entertainment and obviously some great curling. One of the highlights is expected to be the elimination draw on Saturday for a trip for 4 to Las Vegas. Each team will have an entry into the draw which makes for some great odds! Call Chad Kelly to register your rink today 735-7810.
Skaters from the Whitewood Skating Club had a great weekend at the regional competition in Esterhazy on January 30th and 31st. Simone Van’t Westeinde earned Gold in Star 2 free skate, Gold in jumps and Bronze in spins. Hunter Beutler earned Bronze in Star 2 free skate and spins. Tennessee Goodbrand earned Bronze in Star 4 spins, and Silver in Star 3 jumps and Star 4 freeskate. Cassidy Mannle earned Bronze in Star 2 freeskate and jumps. The girls competed together as a team in the Star 2 team event earning Silver. Congrats!
The Whitewood Orioles play two games this weekend to wrap up their regular season. On Friday night the Orioles host the Rocanville Tigers at 8:15pm at the Whitewood Community Centre. Then, on Saturday, the Orioles head to Theodore to take on the Buffs.
There will be a free automated external defibrillator (AED) clinic on Thursday February 18th at 3:30pm in the Whitewood Curling Rink lobby. This clinic will be taught by a certified instructor and will give participants more information and confidence about AED’s and how to use them. These lifesaving devices are becoming more common in public spaces including two at the Whitewood Community Centre and one at the Whitewood Swimming Pool. Weekly Recreation Report – January 29, 2016
Back in action this Saturday night the Whitewood Orioles take on the Kipling Oil Kings in their annual Fan Appreciation Night. The Bird’s are looking to get a win in their second to last home game of the regular season. As part of the fan appreciation night there is a guaranteed $300 50/50, sticks and Orioles clothing draws and free tickets have been handed out to children at Whitewood school. Come out and be part of the crowd!
The Whitewood PreNovice Elks are hosting a tournament this Saturday January 30th. Our youngest Elks are on the ice at 10am with the final to follow later that day at 3pm. Other game times are 11:30am and 1:30pm. Come by the rink for draws, chuck-a-puck and kitchen specials all day.
Capping off a busy Saturday is the Tim Horton’s U18 and U15 Junior Bonspiel. The Whitewood Curling Club is hosting their first bonspiel of the season and are welcoming some of the best junior curlers from Southeast Saskatchewan. The first draw is scheduled for 9am and draws will continue throughout the day with the finals scheduled at 5pm.
It’s your last chance to sign up for the 10th annual Whitewood Ladies Bonspiel for Breast Cancer. The bonspiel begins Friday February 5th with the final draw wrapping up just before the banquet Saturday night. Team and individual entries are being accepted. Sign up today for the 10th annual Whitewood Ladies Curling Bonspiel for Breast Cancer. This year’s bonspiel is scheduled for Friday February 5th and Saturday the 6th. Team entries cost $100 and include 4 tickets to the always fun banquet on Saturday night. Weekend events include appetizers Friday night, banquet and entertainment Saturday night piggy pot/raffle items/Chinese auction. Banquet tickets are also available individually for $15 each. The Whitewood Orioles are back in action at the Whitewood Community Centre on Saturday January 30th at 8:15pm against the Kipling Oil Kings. This is the second last Orioles regular season home game this year so make sure you come out and support the boys!
Looking to see our youngest hockey players in action? The Whitewood PreNovice Elks are hosting a 4 team tournament on Saturday January 30th starting at 10am. Other games are at 11:30am, 1:30pm and the final at 3:00pm. Go Elks Go!
Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do outside. We have a ton of awesome outdoor activities to do right in our own backyard. Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, snowmobiling, icefishing, sliding and more!

Weekly Recreation Report – January 15, 2016
The best of the Major Hockey League will be in Whitewood on Saturday January 16th for the MHL All-star Game. Both Bantam and Midget players from around the area will put their skills to the test in a competition for hardest shot, fastest skater, best puck handler and best goalie. Afterwards, the Bantam all-star game begins at 1pm followed by the Midget game at 3:30pm. Admission for the day is only $5 so make sure you stop by the rink!

Weekly Recreation Report – January 8, 2016
This Saturday January 9th is the annual Whitewood Minor Hockey Day. The action starts at 11:30am with the PreNovice Elks against Esterhazy. Games are scheduled throughout the day with a progressive 50/50, and kitchen specials. Novice Orange Elks face Kahkewistahaw at 1:30pm and Atom Black face Esterhazy at 5:30pm. Following that game the Whitewood Orioles are back in action after their holiday break. The O’s are face the Theodore Buffs with puckdrop at 8:15pm.
Whitewood is the proud host of the 2016 Major Hockey League All-Star game. The best bantam and midget players of the Major Hockey League will be in Whitewood on Saturday January 16th with a skills competition and all-star games. The action starts at 10am with the skills competition and is followed by the bantam game at 1pm and midget game at 3:30pm.
It’s time to work on those new year’s resolutions. Sign up today for PiYO live with Jess Ecklund running 6 weeks, and 12 classes starting January 11th. Classes are Mondays and Thursdays from 6:30pm to 7:30pm at the community centre and the cost to participate is $120 for all 12 classes, $60 for 6 classes or $12 for drop-ins. Congratulations to the skaters from the Whitewood Skating Club who had an excellent weekend at the Virden Funskate Competition. Dixie Goodbrand earned Silver in Canskate Stage 3 and Canskate Team. Hunter Beutler earned Silver in Star 2 Spins, Gold in Star 2 Team, and Bronze in Star 2 Freeskate. Tennessee Goodbrand earned Gold in Star 3 Freeskate, Gold in Star 2 Team, and Bronze in Star 3/4 Spins. Simone Van’t Westeinde earned Silver in both Star 2 Freeskate and Spins. Kennedy Sippola had a particularly successful day winning Gold in Star 5 Freeskate and Bronze Interpretive, Silver in Spins, and Bronze in Elements. Also congratulations to Simone for passing her first test the Dutch Waltz in December. Good luck to the girls as they prepare for Regionals at the end of January and watch for our skaters on the ice this weekend at the Orioles game!

Weekly Recreation Report – December 18, 2015
This New Years Eve make your way down to the Whitewood Community Centre for fun, free family entertainment. There are lots of different things going on including a bonfire, free skating, hotdog roast and of course, fireworks. New this year will be a steak supper put on by the RingLeader Rollergirls. Only 50 tickets are available and can be purchased in advance for $20 from Shontelle Flaman at 435-9364. The night’s festivities start at 5pm and conclude with fireworks at 9pm.
This Friday night, December 18th is the last Orioles home game before the new year. The Orioles are coming off a convincing 11-1 win over the Esterhazy Flyers and look to start a winning streak against the Kipling Oil Kings. This is the annual 12 draws of Christmas game as there will be a guaranteed $300 50/50, turkey draws and gift card giveaways. The game starts at 8:15pm but come early to get a good seat!
With the holidays fast approaching there are some closures to announce. The Recreation Office will be closed from Thursday December 17th until Monday December 28th. If you need assistance with anything during that time please contact the Town Office at 735-2210. The Whitewood Community Centre will be closed on December 24th, 25th 26th and January 1st. All practices, games and public skating times on those days are cancelled. Have a Merry Christmas.
